7 decades of Glamour- 1970’s

Friday, August 27th, 2010

The 1970’s saw the maxi dress, the emergence of the tru boho and the age of disco, which brought with it jumpsuits and glitter! Eyebrows were skinny and lips were glossy. Colours were pastel shades of blue, purple and green, monochrome was gone and softer palletes were hot. Where pastels weren’t used, colour was kept natural and bohemian, this was the first time natural beauty and minimal make-up had really been embraced.

Maud adams is a true 70’s beauty queen, the first and only woman to have the honour of being a bond girl twice! In 1974 In the Man with the Golden Gun and 1983 Octupussy. Her make-up and hair is barely there, yet she looks glamourous all the same, tans in this era were real real real and hair was beachy all the year round.

Today Nicole Ritchie still reps a cool and edgy 70s style that has kept her on the best dressed pages of magazines for years! Her over sized shades and looser clothing, with boho accesories makes her styling effortlessly cool and timeless.

  • A fresh looking natural base is J0ane Iredale’s Dream Tint, one of the best jane Iredael products is Dream Tint Lilac Brightner. This should be applied to cheekbones and just below your eyebrows to highlight higher areas on the face, it creates a great base for the dream tint to sit on. Foundations are best left for this look, as we want skin to be soft, luminious and natural looking.
  • If you want to give some pastels a try; Jane Iredale’s Sea Foam for greens and blues or Pink Bliss for purpley pink. These are great for 70s whispy eyes, as the pallete has 3 shades, so blending should be easy. If you would rather keep eyes more skin tonal, try Jane Iredale’s Sweet spot, and focus on a gleaming and stunning complexion.
  • Similar to 60s lips, glosses were still great on plumped up lips, this time with hints of colour. Jane Iredale’s Sugar plump in Madrid will plump lips with a purple colour. Puregloss in sugar plum is beautiful when worn over the top. Again if maud is more your kinda girl try Just Kissed lip plumper in Milan, this is closer to natural skin tone and is best used without a gloss, just keep it simple.

Top Knots

We always love a good bun, this style has stood the test of time and is constantly being reinvented! We’ve seen these on the catwalks of YSL and ERDEM, while Kate Bosworth and Jessica Alba have looked fabulous with the same style.

  • Firstly try this with freshly washed hair using Tigi Your Highness Thickening Gel and fasten the hair in a high pony using good elastic bands.
  • Try a paddle shaped brush from our Regenico’s range to back comb and volumise the hair in the pony tail to add volume to your bun. Start at the top and brush hair out using large circular movements.
  • Next wrap the hair around the base of the pony tail and pin into place, you can use as many slides as needed, depending on how thick your hair is.
  • set the bun using Tigi Your Highness Firm Hold spray, a little will do the job!
  • my top tip here is to gently massage your bun to give it movement and loosen it up, and encourage a few not too many fly away’s, stiff and prim is not the look we are going for!
  • Finally Enjoy!

Hair School

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Cosmopolitan’s recent September issue has some great looks, that are manageable and easy to create, here’s today’s step by step guide through my favourite hair look’s this month using our best sellers the Tigi Love Peave and Planet range and Marrakesh Oil!

Side Swept Hair

Sarah Jessica Parker looks great with this style, usually styling it up with a huge corsage or hair accessory!

  • Once hair is freshly washed style with curling tongs and a little Tigi Rockaholic Fun Times Flexible Hairspray. This is great for this style as it provides great hold but your curls will still have movement.
  • Next gather all your hair to one side (i always try and gather mine on my best photo side!) and secure with pins.
  • To finish the look you could create a slight side quiff, giving your hair volume for extra glamour. Finish with the old faithful Marrakesh Oil.

Slept in Hair

Beach hair is not just a summer look, un-kept and natural surfer girl hair is said to be fabulous for the coming months. Think Ivy from 90210, Gossip Girl Blake Lively and from time to time Sienna Miller. Surely an excuse to embrace not doing much to your hair should be a good thing? Cosmopolitan love it and so does Emilio Pucci and Marc Jacobs. His recent New York Autumn Winter show presented golden haired natural beauties with natural sleep-over styling. We <3 how easy it is!

  • Part hair in the middle using fingers  and spray Tigi Love Peace Planet Free your Mind Hard Holdspray into the parting to create texture.
  • For extra waves I find twisting hair round my fingers and curling the hair into a mini bun on my head effective. Clip them in for 5 minutes and quickly blast with a hairdryer.
  • Take the clips out and you’ll be a Californian girl!

Muse of the Week- Eva Longoria

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Eva always looks particularly beautiful and radiant, so who better to use as our muse of the week for the perfect olive skinned goddess look!

Eva usually goes for a dewy moist base so a tinted moisturiser is best for this. Try Jane Iredale’s Dream Tint (£29.95), it has an SPF 20 and gives great coverage without the opaque finish foundations give. For the cheeks, darker skin tones should opt for an orange shade blush, to create definition, they already have the depth in colour, any more will look far too over done. For this I think Moonglow is great! (£39.95) Next we look at Eva’s eyes, it may come as a shock to many but bronzes and golds aren’t great for olive skin tones, rusty coppers are best on the eyelids. Eva uses shades similar to the Triple Shadow pallet of Pecan Chocolate (£25). Finally lips should be understated, either a clear gloss (Just Gloss is divine £15), but if you are feeling a little more adventurous try a purple shade, Eva does this every so often and we just love it. Jane Iredale’s Pure Moist Sharon at £15 is just purple enough to plump the lips without being drag-like!

The Michael Kors Smokey Eye

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

It seems this season we will wave good bye to the classic black smokey eye!  But do not fret, a more fresh & this time popping purple smokey eye has replaced our old faithful. Michael Kors make-up artists and stylists love this new shade, informing us its a great eye opener and even anti-ages, as the purple pigment cancels out red puffy eyes and brightens the eyes! (Purple is most yummy for green eyed girls in particular!)

To achieve this look, its best to use a purple coloured eye pallet so a few shades of purple are used, this way you don’t get a monochrome purple finish, you can create depth. Jane Iredale’s Triple Eye Shadow £25 in Cloud Nine is lovely. The best make-up tool really is your finger, as it can create great blending. Alternatively if you prefer your tools, try Jane Iredale’s crease brush at £13. I personally use a black kohl eyeliner (Jane Iredale Basic Black eyeliner £8) to frame my eye from tear duct into cat eye to frame my eye. This makes your eyes defined with a solid frame.

City Chic Make-Up

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

In the summer months our complexions are assaulted by UV rays and exhaust fumes, they react to  free radicals that age the skin and eat away at skins vitamins. It should be paramount for us all to wear a good SPF level all the year round but even more so for those sex and the city breaks in the sun! To keep skin healthy, protected and fresh stick to these simple rules.

Always apply a primer to ensure your make-up stays in place. Primers also create a good clean canvas in which to apply your base and Jane Iredale’s Absence is great (£33). City environments clog pores and create oil on the surface of your skin that can cause your skin to become patchy.

Next a good oil free tinted moisturizer, for this try Dream Tint (£29.95). Tinted moisturizers are ideal for the summer months, keeping your face dewy and glowing. Better still Dream Tint comes with an SPF 15!

Carrying blotting papers £9.50 can be a great trick to minimize oil around your t-zone without having to completely re-apply make-up.

3 truly amazing Jane Iredale products are facial spritz D20, Pommisst and facial spritz Balance. D20 sets the minerals in the dream tint moisturizer and has the most incredible scent of ylang ylang, whilst Pommisst soothes and uplifts the face. Balance is a great option if you have oily skin as it too sets the minerals in dream tint whilst preventing break outs.

All products are available at the Didsbury store and online, so enjoy your city skin!

80’s Make-Up is back says Charlotte Tilbury

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Over recent years 80’s make-up has slowly revived itself onto the British high street. We all loved the Sex and the City 2 flashbacks featuring Carrie and her girls, as their 1980’s former self’s. Designers like Vivienne Westwood have been inspired by the 1980’s for almost two decades, even in recent years Sonia Rykiel and Marc Jacobs have added punk glam twists to their collections & this trend is showing no signs of stopping.

Charlotte Tilbury is the creative force behind brands such as Chloe and Matthew Williamson and has been called the “go-to-girl” of Kate Moss, so we’re thinking she might know a bit about beauty and style! Tilbury is a big lover of the 1980’s look whilst adding a modern twist keeping it fresh and unique. (We don’t want to look like we’ve actually fallen out of Dynasty…).

Here are her 3 top 80’s looks

The first she calls her “80’s Club Kid all grown up”. This is the 80’s raver as a woman and how she will change her make-up to suit. Charlotte tells us that for green eyes opt for a purple eye shadow and Jane Iredale has the most decadent purple shades to suit. Try Cloud Nine at £25 and mix all the purple tones to find a shade that suits how deep your green is. Turquoise will make brown eyes pop and the best is my favourite 24K Dust in Aquamarine at £11. For blue eyes try a champagne or gold shade, again 24K Dust will do the job this time in Champagne. This mature style queen should opt for deep current coloured lips, first apply a lip plump in a similar colour; we like Madrid £20 and cover with Annie Bridget or Halle each £15, to spruce up and give your lips a shine try Mulberry £15.

The Second look Charlotte talks us through is the “Glossy Glamazon“, the glamazons of the 80’s didn’t wear blackcurrant eyeshadow, they wore Aztec golds and bronzes. The best part of this look, is the sculpted Debbie Harry cheeks, try a mixture of Moonglow and Sunbeam £39.95. Charlottes top tip for blush application is to suck in your cheek bones and line the blush under the bone and blend into the hair line. This gives the illusion of a thinner face and natural sun kissed cheeks. Cheryl Cole opted for this look in her “Fight for this Love” video! For lips try a deep off-red Nicole is stunning!

Charlotte’s third look is the “Sporty Shimmer”, by this we mean a fresh faced and radiant! Olivia Newton-John is this girl! Try mixing gold 24K Dust and a little Green 24K Dust for an expensive metallic-effect eye shadow. The most important part of the sport shimmer is the brows, for help here the queen of eyebrows Brooke Sheilds is out best bet. Charlotte tells us to avoid thick heavy eye brows and instead use a brow brush £9.50 to seperate the brows, fill in with brown eye shadow if absolutely necessary. When plucking, follow your brows natural contour and never ever over pluck.

20 Reasons to Wear More Make-Up!!!

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Glamour’s beauty writers have given us the best excuse to go wild and wear even more make-up, stating that more room must be made in ones make-up bag, as this season’s new colours are HOT HOT HOT!

Four Hit List Areas that need to be checked!

Cheeks should be pinky and red this season, the colour being taken from beneath the cheekbone towards the hairline, in a graduating fashion. (Rag doll red rosy cheeks aren’t for us!). To achieve this Jane Iredale’s Cream Blush is great especially in Confidence (deep red) and Clarity (girly pink) both are £19.75. If you prefer the more traditional blushers try the Pure Pressed collection; Flush is a fabulous red shade and Parfait is my favourite for a lighter option, also £19.75.

Lips should always be conditioned before using a lip colour, Jane Iredale’s Lip Plumper (£19.95) is ideal for this. Sticky lip-gloss lips are out this season, lips should instead be velvety and moisturised with lipstick!  For this, why not try Jane Iredale’s Lip colour in Nicole or for a pouty 1950’s red; Carrie £15.

Eyes this autumn are chestnut, espresso, chocolate and bronzed! The great thing about using brown shades is that all hair and skin colours look fabulous with deep brown smouldering eyes, so whether you’re a Swedish blonde or a Mediterranean brunette this look is for you!  Jane Iredale’s Pure Pressed Kits (we like Daytime the best!) offers five options all mocha in pigment, priced at £38. Alternatively Pure Pressed Single Eye shadow in either Dark Suede or Dusk are a little heavier for more dramatic make-up.

To stock up on all these lovelies come to Heaven!
